PLEASING TO BE BACK OUT THERE

9 July 2016

After getting 45 minutes under his belt in the Iron’s first friendly of pre-season at Stamford AFC, defender Murray Wallace says it was pleasing to be back out on the football field.

Wallace played the second half at the Zeeco Stadium, as the visitors ran out comfortable 3-0 victors.

The Scot believes, despite there being no points on offer, United should look to carry on in the ruthless manner in which they finished the previous campaign.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Wallace said: “It was good to get a run out - we only played a half each but I think initially that’s enough.

“I think the key is to start looking at what we want to do in the season. For example, picking up small tactical things that we’re going to take forward to the campaign.

“It’s important we stick with our winning mentality, and everybody wants to win all the time, and it’s important we start doing the right things against any level of opponent."

There’s no rest for the Iron squad however, as they head to Austria on Saturday - where they’ll play matches against Union UNIS Gschwandt and FC Liefering respectively.

These are matches Wallace feels will be sure to test the squad.

“I’ve never been to Austria so I don’t know what it’s got in store. I imagine it’ll be tough, like any pre-season camp is,” he stated.

“We’ve got a couple of games over there, which we’re all looking forward to as well. They are against two Austrian sides, who will obviously play a different style of football, so it should be interesting.”

After their Austria trip, United return to the UK to face Hull City, Rotherham and Hartlepool United before the commencement of the new season, and the 23-year-old believes clashes with Premier League and Championship opposition will be a good barometer for where the Iron currently are.

“Hull, Rotherham and Hartlepool will all provide a good test,” he added.

“Hull are obviously a good team, and Rotherham are in the league above, so they’ll be a good team to play against and a good test for us also."
