United’s attacking midfielder Luke Williams was pleased to see his side give local rivals Hull City a stern test, considering the Tigers have just been promoted to the Premier League.
The Tigers ran out 2-0 winners from Saturday's first home friendly of pre-season.Shaun Maloney put the visitors ahead after 25 minutes, before Abel Hernandez completed the scoring in the second half, but the Iron did have their chances to score.
“It was good to get a run out,” Williams told The Iron PlayerHD.
“With it being against a good side too, we can’t take too much disappointment from the result, because they’ll be playing in the Premier League this year.”
Williams believes the results in pre-season come second in terms of priority, with the chance for the players to improve their fitness against a good team the main thing.
“I think we gave a good account of ourselves and we didn’t make things too easy for them, so I believe we can take the positives from that." he said.
“The main thing now is to get the miles under the belt and get the game time in, because match fitness is a completely different kind of fitness compared to just running.”
Williams added: “We didn’t roll over and make things easy for them, I thought we were resolute and I think we created a few chances, which are positives we can take from the game.”
Rotherham United will be the next side from a higher league to test the Iron, as we play host to the Millers this coming Tuesday, and Williams wants to make sure his side get the result and the fitness from the match.
“It’s about getting minutes, but no one likes to get beat so we’ll still want to win the game and give a good account of ourselves," he concluded.
