The pre-season training camp in Austria has been a tough examination according to United full back Conor Townsend.

However, at the same, he stated it’s a must if he and his team-mates want to give themselves the best possible chance of starting the new season positively.

Townsend revealed the hot conditions have added to the already challenging training sessions. However, he reiterated pre-season is all about shaping up, ready for the upcoming campaign.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Townsend said: “It’s been tough, but that’s what it’s for.

“The weather at the start of the week was obviously quite hot, which made it hard work, but the rain has come down in the past couple of days.

“I’ve enjoyed it, it’s been an enjoyable trip, but the main thing is getting the fitness levels up, and I feel we’ve done that.”

The 23-year-old admitted it was extremely frustrating to see the first of two games (against Union Unis Gschwandt) in Austria called off due to torrential rain, and says he hopes there’s no more disruptions in United’s next match, when they face FC Liefering on Friday (5.30pm kick off UK time).

“Hopefully the game will be on first and foremost, so that we can get some more minutes under our belts,” he said.

“Just so we can sharpen up our match fitness, because that’s obviously the idea of the game, so hopefully we can do that.”

He also gave an insight into how the squad is faring so far in pre-season, saying everyone returned from their summer break in good condition.

“I think we’re looking pretty good. We’re quite a fit team, there’s not really anyone who’s lagging behind in the runs,” he stated.

“Everyone’s come back in good shape, and we’re just trying to add to that, to make sure we’re ready for the first game.”
