The Iron will face Middlesbrough, Shrewsbury Town and Cambridge United in the Group Stage of the EFL Trophy.

The draw took place at 10am on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the EFL's Operations Centre in Preston. Preston North End Manager Simon Grayson assisted Football Services Director, David Cookson, in conducting the draw.

The new-look format sees one invited team in each of the sixteen groups, with the top two from each group progressing to round two of the competition. Each team will face each other once in the group stages, either home or away, with the invited team playing one of their three group fixtures at their first team stadium, playing their other two away from home.

The Iron will play two of their three trophy games at home before their final group encounter sees Graham Alexander's side travel to Cambridge United.
