ALEXANDER REACTS TO MANTOM SWOOP

1 July 2016

Graham Alexander was delighted to secure a main summer target in Sam Mantom on Thursday afternoon.

The midfielder arrives on a three-year deal after his contract at former club Walsall expired at the end of the 2015-16 season.

"It's great to finally get him in the building," he told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk.

"It's been going on for quite a while and I met him probably about a month ago in Birmingham and we had a chat for a good couple of hours. I explained what we're about as a club and the ambitions.

"I told him how I thought he would fit into our plans, but I know he had quite a lot of options to consider but now he's here he will get into the swing of things really quickly."

The 24-year-old scored nine goals in 47 appearances for the Saddlers in the last campaign which resulted in a play-off semi-final defeat to Barnsley, with the Iron's latest recruit dubbed as one of the key players to their success.

"He's a very good footballer," Alexander stated.

"He's a fit lad, gets around the pitch and scores goals. He's always impressed me when playing against teams I've managed in the past and he was a major part of the relative success with Walsall last season that just missed out in the play-offs.

"He's got the best years of his career ahead of him. He's an ambitious lad and we are an ambitious club and it's likeminds coming together.

"We're looking for players who can give us a full season of performances and with Josh Morris and Sam Mantom we have two players who fit that bill. They're proven at League One level."

Diverting his attentions to other possible incomings, the United boss will again remain patient in bringing in new faces - stating the wait is worth it when players like Mantom opt to join the club.

"Sam was one we've been working on the hardest in the last week or so," he continued.

"Apart from that, we've got a couple of enquiries and discussions underway but we are a long way from bringing anyone else into the club.

"Like I've said before, we want to be patient, we want players who we feel can help us and we will take time to make those decisions.

"I'm glad we've done that because it was worth that wait for Sam and hopefully that will be the same for the other additions."
