REPORT: IRON DEV 1-3 ROTHERHAM DEV

26 January 2016

Iron attacker Gary McSheffrey made his return for the development team at home to Rotherham United on Tuesday night.

The winger had been out of action for almost two months with a knee injury, but made his comeback for the second string against the Millers and played just over an hour.

The first action of the game saw Ledger have to gather an in-swinging free kick from the halfway line following a foul on the far side.

Pretty soon after, the visitors headed a corner over the crossbar as they looked to take an early advantage.

McSheffrey then played in Hakeeb Adelakun whose cross into the box was deflected away for a corner, but nothing came of the subsequent set-piece.

The first real chance of the game arrived three minutes later when Emmanuel Ledesma shot high into the Britcon Stand for the visitors from 25 yards out after being teed up.

The visitors did take on the lead on 19 minutes as Ledesma's free-kick from the edge of the area took a deflection and wrongfooted Ledger in the Iron goal before nestling in the back of the net.

In the 21st minute, Scunthorpe had their first chance at goal as Andrew Boyce headed over the crossbar from a McSheffrey corner, after good work and strength from Kyle Wootton to initially win it.

Just a minute later, Adelakun drilled a shot into the back of the net but that came after a referee's whistle and a flag to signal that Wootton was offside.

On 31 minutes, a great long ball from Goode set Adelakun down the right with him swinging a first-time ball to Butroid. He was then penalised for a foul on the edge of the area after controlling the ball and bringing down the defender.

Seven minutes later, Jerry Yates drilled wide of the right-hand post for Rotherham following good strength from Jonson Clarke-Harris on the left.

On the stroke of half-time, the Millers added a second as Clarke-Harris powered his way into the box before slotting beyond Ledger.

In the 50th minute, Adelakun fed McSheffrey through the middle, with the latter running past Wood before being halted in his tracks.

Jerry Yates drew Ledger into a save down to his right five minutes later, after a low effort from the edge of the area.

Just a minute later, Boyce was calm under pressure as he headed over the crossbar from a cross from Lewis Buxton to give the Millers a corner.

With 58 minutes on the clock, McSheffrey was fed down the left. He controlled with one touch and fired narrowly over the crossbar with the second.

Nine minutes later, there was a great chance for the Iron to half the deficit as Adelakun took a quick throw-in to Butroid. His first-time delivery was superb, floating the cross for Goode, who sent his header wide of the near post from 15 yards out.

Rotherham added a third in the 73rd minute. Former Leeds striker Luciano Becchio got the goal, slotting past Ledger after the Iron failed to clear in the penalty area.

The Iron pulled a goal back with nine minutes remaining. Adelakun turned on the pace on the right wing, flicking the ball over one defender before driving into the box. He then fired a cross in for Wootton, who smashed into the roof of the net from a couple of yards out.

Three minutes later, Burdett weaved his way into space on the right of the area before firing a shot over the bar.

With just seconds remaining, Goode crashed a shot off the inside of the post after a smart turn. It came from Adelakun's corner and Wootton's lay-off, and proved to be the last chance of the game.
