BIG MATCH PREVIEW: IRON v MORECAMBE

6 December 2016

United entertain Morecambe at Glanford Park, as they look to progress to the next phase of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Graham Alexander’s men qualified emphatically from their group, taking nine points out of a possible nine.

Tuesday’s visitors will provide tough opposition however, with them also reaching this stage of the competition in impressive fashion.

Alexander says he’ll give opportunities to a number of players against the Shrimps, as he looks to rotate his squad.

On the injury front, the Iron manager doesn’t expect David Mirfin and captain Stephen Dawson to be back in action anytime soon, but did reveal both are progressing well.

Dawson is the closer of the two to being fit again, however Alexander was reluctant to put a timeframe on his return.

The Iron were cruelly denied all three points back in 2014, with Jack Sampson’s 96th minute header earning a share of the points at the Globe Arena.

Sam Winnall opened the scoring in the first half, as he headed home Paddy Madden’s cross.

Jim Bentley’s men improved after the break, and forced United ‘keeper Sam Slocombe into producing a string of superb saves to keep them at bay.

However, the home side kept plugging away and, after Kevin Ellison’s strike was chalked off for offside, Sampson levelled things up in the dying embers of the game.

Striker Cole Stockton spent time at the Globe Arena towards the back end of the 2015-16 campaign on loan from Tranmere Rovers.

The forward has returned for another initial six month period this season also, and has picked up where he left off by scoring five goals already, making him the club’s top scorer.
