COUNTING DOWN NOW

5 August 2016

Iron defender Murray Wallace says he’s counting down until the new season gets underway, following what he described as an intense pre-season.

Bristol Rovers visit Glanford Park on Saturday for the season opener, and it’s a game Wallace states he and his teammates will be going into in a buoyant mood.

Wallace told The Iron PlayerHD: “I can’t wait. We’ve had a tough pre-season, and it seemed like quite a long one, especially when you’re doing all of those runs.

“It’s all worth it now though, and the first game of the new campaign is coming - a game which the whole squad can’t wait for. Expectations are high, confidence is high and we just can’t wait to crack on now.

“I feel we’re riding that crest of a wave still and think we should be. If we play with confidence you’ll see us attacking teams, and hopefully that excites the fans."

The Scot believes United are well set for the long campaign ahead, after the arrivals of three new faces into the club.

The centre-back highlighted that the strength in depth which originally existed has been enhanced, something which bodes well moving forward.

“He’s (Graham Alexander) brought in three really good attacking midfielders in Josh (Morris), Duane (Holmes) and Sam (Mantom),” he said.

“We’ve got such a strong squad, where there’s competition all over and adding a bit more can do nothing but help us I feel."

Looking at Saturday’s opponents, the former Huddersfield Town man spoke of the positive nature in which Darrell Clarke’s side will be approaching the game.

He said facing promoted sides on the opening day is always a tough test, and one the Iron will have to be ready for.

“They’re bringing a lot of away supporters, and they’re obviously confident - which they should be,” he stated.

“They’ve got themselves out of a league and fair play to them. It’s not going to be an easy game, it’s going to be a really tough test for us."
