BIG MATCH PREVIEW: PORT VALE (A)

26 August 2016

The Iron will be looking to keep their unbeaten start to the new league season in tact when they head to Port Vale this weekend.

United suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night - in the EFL Cup in extra time against Bristol City. As for the league though, it’s been a near faultless opening from Scunthorpe, taking 10 points out of possible 12.

Despite the loss to the Robins in midweek, the squad will head to Staffordshire full of confidence, after matching the Championship side throughout.

Manager Graham Alexander revealed that he’ll have pretty much the same squad to choose from, going into the clash at Vale Park.

The United boss declared the usual bumps and bruises following Tuesday's game against Bristol City, but says there are no fresh injury worries ahead of Saturday.

Speaking about the players on the treatment table, Alexander does not expect to welcome back the likes of Paddy Madden, Luke Williams, Sam Mantom or Jamie Ness for the trip to Port Vale, although progress is positive on all counts.

A bumper Glanford Park crowd of 7,275 watched the Iron emerge 1-0 victors the last time the two sides met back in April.

A Paddy Madden header just after the hour mark left United on the cusp of the play-off places with one game remaining.

Scunthorpe were dominant throughout the match and, on another day, the 1-0 scoreline could have been much more.

Following his move from Crewe Alexandra in 2015, Anthony Grant has become something of a permanent fixture in the Port Vale starting eleven.

Starting his career at Premier League side Chelsea, Grant then was sent out on loan to clubs such as Oldham Athletic, Wycombe Wanderers and Southend United. He would join the latter on a permanent deal in 2008.

In total, he’s accumulated over 400 Football League appearances, and picked up several player of the year awards in his first season with the Valiants.
