SHOWS HOW FAR WE'VE COME

17 April 2016

Following the 3-2 victory at Crewe Alexandra, Iron defender David Mirfin stated the result shows just how far the team have come this season.

Crewe went ahead early on before Luke Williams’ double and a Hakeeb Adelakun strike sandwiched in between put United on their way to a second victory in succession.

Pleased with how the side were able to regroup after that early setback, Mirfin told The Iron PlayerHD: “We did it the hard way but on the flip side, to get three points like that shows how far we’ve come this season.

“Apart from the goal, they didn’t have many other chances in the first half and I think we scored at a great stage going into half time.

“We kicked on in the second half and it was good to go 3-1 up from a losing position but we’re disappointed that we let them back in it.

“We kind of took our foot off the gas and thought we were going to coast the last 15 minutes so we’ve got to give them a lot of respect for sticking in it.

“They got a goal back and made it really tough for us in the last few minutes.”

The win came seven days after Graham Alexander’s men had dispatched Burton Albion on home soil and now gives the side a bit of momentum heading into the final matches of the season.

Keen to take as many points as possible during that time, Mirfin believes doing so will stand the squad in good stead as summer approaches.

“The gaffer touched on it as soon as he came in,” he continued.

“He said he didn’t want any game to be a nothing game and that’s been the case. Any confidence we get from these remaining games will be good to take into next season.

“It puts that trait into the lads that we want to go into every match to get the three points.

“Every game in this league is a hard game regardless of the stage of the season but we’ve got to try and keep this momentum going and pick up as many points as we can.”

The centre-back finished with a final comment about penning a new deal at Glanford Park, adding, “it was never going to be about me today after signing a new deal this week.

“But, certainly, the win tops off signing the deal and it’s been a great week.”
