SETTING THE BAR HIGHER

11 April 2016

Iron goalkeeper Joe Anyon stated it was vital everyone in the side showed both quality and defensive grit throughout the 1-0 victory over Burton Albion at Glanford Park.

He felt as good as United were from an attacking perspective, they were equally as impressive at the back - something which was crucial if the home side were to take all three points.

He told The Iron PlayerHD: “It was a good victory, a scrappy game. The first half wasn’t pretty, but in the second half we got the ball down and played.

“We showed we can do both sides, the nitty gritty and the quality. The quality came and we ended up getting the goal, so it was a great win.

“You’ve got to set your standards out, because they’re up there and that’s an incentive for us to go and beat them whichever way we can.

“We could either play football, or do the scrappy side of it - which we did and, in doing so, we showed we’re capable of beating the teams which are up there.”

PRE-MATCH: Joe Anyon prepares with a read of the matchday programme.

The match was Anyon’s first since he lined up against Swindon back in November and, for the United shotstopper, the start was something he very much relished.

Anyon said: “It’s been a long time coming, and I enjoyed it. I tried to make the most of it, because you don’t want too much work to do.

“However, when you’re called upon, you’re there to do the job and I like to think I did today. I enjoyed it. So to get out there in a good fixture, and show where I am, I’m happy with.”

The victory takes the Iron up to ninth place in the League One table, and Anyon highlighted how crucial the success will be going forward.

“We’ve got to take the momentum ahead into next season. There are a lot of lads who are going to be here next year, in the changing room,” he stated.

“We’ve got to finish as high as we can, and as well as we can. So we can’t take our foot off the gas and the manager won’t let us.

“It’s all about standards and setting the bar higher, so when we come back in pre-season we’re ready to hit the ground running.”
