AIMING FOR BEST POSITION WE CAN

17 April 2016

United’s Luke Williams believes it was huge to take all three points from the clash with Crewe Alexandra, especially given what he calls the opponents’ ‘nothing to lose’ mentality.

The Iron came from behind to beat the Railwaymen 3-2 and, despite suffering relegation, Williams feels the home side gave a good account of themselves.

Williams told The Iron PlayerHD: “It’s massive for us to come here and pick the three points up, because anything could have happened. However, we dug deep and got the win in the end.

“When you come to sides, particularly with what has gone on here, they come out with nothing to lose and that makes it hard for us because you don’t know what you’re going to get.

“I think they did well today and, in a hostile environment, they showed their fans that they’ve still got fight left in them.

“I think we made it hard for ourselves and I think we could have had the game sewn up and buried at 3-1.

“We took our foot off the gas a little bit and let Crewe back into it, but the lads did well.

"We defended well too, which meant we could hold them off and get the three points.”

The 22-year-old got on the scoresheet twice in the victory but, in his eyes, taking three points is always the most important thing.

He said: “It’s always a bonus to score, and especially to help the team win as well - it’s good for me."

Saturday’s success means it’s now back-to-back league victories for Williams and his team-mates - something which he says can only breed confidence within the camp.

“All we can do is keep on winning as many games as we can between now and the end of the season, to put ourselves in the best position we can,” he stated.

“So hopefully, if we can end well, we can pick up where we left off at the start of next season.”

Next up for the Iron is a home encounter with Bury on Tuesday night, and it’s a game Williams is in an optimistic mood ahead of.

“I think they’re a tough side, they’re good at what they do and they have experience,” he added.

“However, we beat them down at their place, and I fully believe we are capable of doing likewise again.”
