YOUTH SIDE SEE OFF LEAGUE LEADERS

19 October 2015

The Iron’s U18 side recorded a 1-0 home win over Bradford City on Saturday, with Noel Burdett scoring the winner.

The decisive goal came in the second half when the second year trainee picked up the ball midway in the Bantams’ half and drove forward, coming from the right, beating two or three opponents before getting to the edge of the box and firing a left-footed shot beyond the goalkeeper, wrongfooting him and finding the bottom corner.

“He showed real determination to keep going and that’s something Noel is strong at, running at defences and taking them on,” said academy manager Tony Daws.

He added: “It was a tough game against Bradford, who are top of the league at the moment and have been a strong side for two or three seasons now.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game but our mental approach was really good but the lads were determined, and full of desire and enthusiasm to compete. That’s what we did really. It was a really pleasing performance.

“They deserve real credit for the way they played and the team spirit was fantastic. We came under quite a bit of pressure late on and managed to stick at it, with some good saves from Ben Ledger as well,”

Team: Ledger, Baker, Shilling, Butroid, Cleminshaw (McMichael), Stockill, Burdett, Dean-Atkinson, Sackey (Barmby), Dyche, Watkis (Sithole).
