Manager Mark Robins was left reflecting on how his side left Gillingham without any points after being “by far the better team”.
The Iron suffered a 2-1 reverse in Kent after leading through Scott Laird’s second goal in three days. The hosts hit back with two goals from set-pieces – the latter of which was in stoppage time after former midfielder Josh Wright had been sent off for what the referee deemed to be serious foul play.“I can’t believe we haven’t won – never mind drawn, I can’t believe we haven’t won,” he told The Iron PlayerHD.
“I think we were good all night and made it really difficult for the team at the top of the league at the moment and really, I just feel like we’ve been mugged. They’ve got a goal at the end and we’ve conceded two set-piece goals which have been poor.
“We’ve had really good chances to put the game to bed and we’ve had an unbelievable chance right at the death to equalise and the keeper made an unbelievable save. We just couldn’t get the ball into the net and it wasn’t meant to be for some reason.
“That’s how it feels after the game because we’ve done everything in our power to try and get the win and we weren’t looking to draw.
“It’s really disappointing and I can’t quite believe we haven’t got a point.”
Speaking about the result, there will be lots of positives to take from the result going into the next away fixture against Chesterfield on Saturday.
“The game had everything,” he continued.
“We had strength and power. We had the desire, commitment and quality – the delivery into the box was good and some good movements and really I would imagine that they’ve only had two or three efforts on our goal.
“We can’t dwell on it or feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to make sure we take those positives, we’ve come to their place and given them a really good game. We wouldn’t have even been content with a point, because we were by far the better team.
“It’s a cruel game at times, but we’ve got to get on with it. Hopefully we will get that little bit of luck sometime in the future."
