WILLIAMS RETURNS TO TRAINING

11 March 2015

Iron defender Marcus Williams could be available for Saturday’s home fixture against Sheffield United, according to assistant manager Ned Kelly.

Williams has missed Scunthorpe’s last three games after sustaining a back injury in the 1-0 defeat against Barnsley. However, the full back trained on Tuesday morning, with Kelly describing his return as “good news for everybody.”

He stated: “He’ll be in contention for the weekend as long as there is no reaction,” said Kelly. “Marcus should be okay and he’ll be welcomed back if he’s available.”

Mark Robins’ number two praised Williams for the level of commitment he has shown in recovering from his spell on the sidelines.

He said: “Marcus has worked hard behind the scenes. People don’t realise that sometimes it is more difficult being injured than it is being fit due to the rehab and things you have to do in order to come back quicker.”

Robins brought in Hull City defender Conor Townsend as cover for the injured Williams, meaning a decision may have to be made in terms of who gets the nod for Saturday’s fixture against the Blades.

“Conor has done very well,” said Kelly. "He’s a good kid with a bright future in the game. That’ll be a decision for the gaffer closer to the weekend.”
