PLEASED WITH IRON'S EFFORTS

25 July 2015

United assistant manager Ned Kelly was pleased with his side’s efforts after they advanced to the semi-final of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup.

It came following a 5-2 victory over Lincoln United on Saturday afternoon with a brace from Kyle Wootton and strikes from Kevin van Veen, Sean McAllister and Noel Burdett, setting the Iron up to face Lincoln City within the next seven days (venue and date details to be confirmed).

“It was very pleasing,” he told The Iron PlayerHD.

“I’m really pleased that both of the strikers have scored, so that’s really good news. It was disappointing the way we conceded the two goals and we were defensively sloppy for those goals. Credit to the players though, they stuck to what we were talking about before the game and at half time and came out and deservedly won the game quite comfortably in the end.

“We’ve been trying to rotate things as much as possible to try and get minutes into the players and we’ve been careful in how we’ve done the training with the load and the minutes we’ve been putting into them.

“It was a pleasing game. Sean McAllister sat in there nicely and picked some passes through and scored a lovely goal. When you win 5-2, it can paper over a few things.

“It’s a squad game. We’re not going to use just eleven players this season. Everyone will have a part to play this season. It was important we were professional and it was important we gave a good account of ourselves. We gave the competition the respect and due credit it deserves.

“I’m delighted we’re through and now we look forward to getting back to training on Monday.”

Luke Daniels returned to the side to play 90 minutes after suffering with a slight groin strain, with the assistant manager confirming his injury worries are now behind him.

“He’s okay now,” he continued.

“He resumed training at the start of the week. We didn’t want to rush him too much, but he was pleased to get the 90 minutes and happy he got through it without any problems – along with everybody else – he’s just disappointed he let two goals in.”
