HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING

7 July 2015

Iron boss Mark Robins hopes to see his side hit the ground running as they returned to training ahead of the new campaign.

The United manager has been busy in the close season, adding several new faces to his squad and believes supporters are right to feel optimistic.

Robins told The Iron Player: “From what I'm hearing, the supporters are excited about the season coming up and I hope that continues as the season draws nearer.

“We want to go out and win games to try and get up the league and into a position we want to be in.

“We need to hit the ground running, but we won't get too down if it doesn't go to plan as it's a long season.

“It's a tough start for us, but it's an exciting challenge.

“We want to get into the top six though and we have to be strong and determined, giving it a real go.”

The Iron boss has already added eight players this summer, including former Preston trio Scott Laird, Jack King and Scott Wiseman, who all join on free transfers.

Robins was happy to have captured the former Lilywhites and felt that his squad was starting to take shape ahead of the new campaign.

He said: “There's so much competition for players and my phone has been red hot at times, but we've got the lads from Preston in quickly and they would have been highly sought after, so that is pleasing for us.

“We've brought in some great characters in and the dressing room is really vibrant. Everything is pointing towards a good team spirit and a really good dressing room.

“We need everyone as fit as possible ahead of the season, and we've got really good pre-season lined up.

“You want to win every game, even if it is a friendly, and then we want to hit the ground running at the start of the season.”

Despite the players only being in for a few days, Robins already feels that there are positive signs that the squad is already starting to gel and hoped to see that continue.

The Iron boss said: “There's the making of a really good dressing room and we want to enhance that.

“This is the stage where you can put all your points across and the principles we want use, plus the style of play.

“After that we have to make sure we get the best out of our lads. Initially, it has been a good couple of days to get the players back into it.”
