FITNESS THE MAIN THING AT THIS STAGE

14 July 2015

United defeated Lincolnshire neighbours Gainsborough Trinity 3-0 on Saturday.

We spoke with goalscoring defender Andrew Boyce to gather his take on the match.

The Iron performed superbly well in both halves, as two different sides took to the field.

But it was the second half team that did all of the damage, and that was thanks to an opening goal from Boyce on his return to Gainsborough.

Happy with the way the first friendly of this pre-season went, the defender said: “I thought we did okay. Obviously fitness is one of the main things at this stage.

"It’s the first friendly but it was a competitive game and we got the win, but it’s not so much about that.”

Boyce managed to get his name on the scoresheet in the second half, following a superb corner from McSheffrey. Talking about the goal, he said: “Sheffs swung one in and it missed everybody and hit me on the shin. It was a bit of a lucky goal to be honest.”

The players travelled to Marbella on Sunday morning for a week of hard training in the sun.

Boyce was looking forward to the chance to have the team bond together more, with nine new faces signed added to the Iron’s squad already this pre-season.

He stated: “It will bring us together a bit more going away. We will be doing some hard training, so it will be good for team bonding.”

With more friendlies to come before the start of the Sky Bet League One season, Boyce is hoping the players can continue to play to the standard that was set on Saturday.

He said: “We want to get our fitness up ideally first, then we can worry about performing well and start gelling as a team and start doing what the Gaffer wants, so hopefully with the friendlies coming it will all come together.”
