Iron defender Scott Laird has stated United must focus on what lies ahead now.United travel to Leyton Orient in the second round of the FA Cup this weekend, and Laird feels it’s an ideal opportunity to put things right after last week's loss to Peterborough.
“Everyone was bitterly disappointed," he said.
"But there’s not a lot we can really do about it now, we’ve got to really face up to it and stand up and be counted,” he told The Iron PlayerHD.
“We need to show people it isn’t us. We came up against a Peterborough side who are good, but not as good as we made them look.”
A victory for Mark Robins’ side would mean progression to the third round of the competition, something which the defender thinks would be of real benefit to the club.
“It's the FA Cup second round, you win that and you’re in the draw. You pull out a Premier League team and in football things can change very quickly, and that’s the beauty of football,” he said.
“It can bring some great publicity, some great attention to the town, and it’s something we’ll be aiming to do, especially after the week we’ve just had.”
The full-back also spoke of the test which he and his team-mates will face this weekend, and he stated everyone in the squad is under no illusions about the quality the O’s have in their ranks.
On the other hand though, the former Preston man feels the Iron are more than capable of emerging victorious and, by doing so, he thinks it will go some way to righting the wrongs of last Saturday.
“They’re a very good side, they’ve got some very good individual players. They started very well in League Two,” he stated.
“They’ve had a bit of a dip, but they’re still up there, and they’ll be a team that’ll be very hard, especially at their place to overcome.
“But I think as a squad we really have to repay everybody. The management, the owners and especially the fans. So it’s something we’ll really want to put right.”
