WE HAVE TO PUT A GOOD PERFORMANCE IN FOR THEM

20 August 2015

David Mirfin says he and the rest of the Iron squad are looking to put in a big performance for the fans this weekend.

The Iron take on Millwall at Glanford Park this Saturday (3pm kick-off) and will be looking to bounce back from the 3-0 midweek loss at Wigan.

He stated: “The lads have got enough belief in themselves, but we want to go out and repay the fans, and show that we can play well.

"We have to put in a good performance for them.”

Mirfin admitted the manner of the loss at Wigan was not acceptable.

“I think all we can do is hold our hands up and say we weren’t good enough from the first minute to the 90th,” he added when reflecting on the defeat at the DW Stadium.

“To come to a place like this, to a club who were yet to score (from open play) and yet to win, you should come here full of confidence - which we did.

"But when you give away a penalty in the second minute it puts any gameplan on the back foot.

“Wigan looked better on the ball, physically stronger, fitter and quicker than us on the night.

"It’s not good enough and not acceptable for the standard we want to set.”

It wasn’t a chance Mirfin had expected to get at the start of the campaign, but an injury to Niall Canavan in the league opener paved the way for the defender to make his return to the first team.

“I think I’ve done okay," he said. "There are things I want to improve on and get better. Maybe that will come with more games if I get the chance.

“It’s not a chance I expected until Niall (Canavan) got injured, but that’s football. You’re sat in the stands one week, then the next you’re starting.

"You’ve always got to be prepared and ready to take your chance.”
