PAST TIMES: OLDHAM v IRON

26 September 2014

The Iron head to Oldham on Saturday, a fixture that has seen some entertaining clashes over the years.

The sides have played each other 43 times, with the Iron winning 13 of those, Oldham winning 11 and 16 draws.

They last played each other in January 2013, where Oldham came back from two goals down to draw 2-2.

In that match, The Iron went 2-0 up in the first twenty minutes through goals from Niall Canavan and  and Mark Duffy before former United captain Cliff Byrne and Jose Baxter levelled the game.

HIGH-SCORING ENCOUNTER…
29/10/05 – Scunthorpe United 4-2 Oldham Athletic

The clash at Glanford Park in the 2005/2006 season saw an entertaining encounter, as the Iron beat the Latics 4-2.

A free kick from Andy Liddell gave Oldham the lead but goals from Andy Butler and Billy Sharp gave the Iron a short lead before Liddell got his second before the break.

The Iron took the victory in the second half through a goal from Andy Crosby and then Sharp’s second of the game.

TEN VERSUS NINE…
12/08/03 - Scunthorpe United 2-1 Oldham Athletic

The game between the two sides in the League Cup back in 2003 was certainly an intense affair, with the Iron being reduced to ten men and Oldham to nine.

The first real incident was just before half time, when an off the ball scuffle between Matt Sparrow and Oldham’s Darren Sheridan resulted in them both being sent off and this was quickly followed a minute later by Danny Boshell being sent off for a second bookable offence.

An early second half brace from Paul Hayes gave the Iron a two goal lead and whilst Mickael Antoine-Curier managed to get one back for the Latics, the Iron held on for the win.

LATE DRAMA AT BOUNDARY PARK...
27/01/09 – Oldham Athletic 1-2 Scunthorpe United

All of the action came late on when the two sides met back at the beginning of 2009.

Dave Mirfin gave the Iron the lead in the 73rd minute and this was followed by a Filipe Morais equaliser five minutes later before Garry Thompson scored the winner just two minutes after that.

However, that wasn’t the end of the incidents, with Keanu Marsh-Brown being sent off for Oldham in the 87th minute and that being followed by Jimmy Walker taking an early bath two minutes later.
