WINNALL DELIGHTED WITH NOMINATION

11 March 2014

Iron striker Sam Winnall is delighted to have been nominated for a Football League Award.

The frontman will find out if he has won the League Two Player of the Year honour on Sunday night at the Brewery in London.

"It's a fantastic achievement on a personal level to be recognised as one of the best players in the league," Winnall told The Iron Player.

"I think it's a reward that's repaid my faith and my goals.

"I'm really pleased, and it's a great credit to the rest of the team for helping me to get there.

"I found out about the nomination when Russ Wilcox mentioned it to me last week that I'd been nominated.

"Then the letter came through from the Football League, and it was a great moment for me and my family - and everyone who's been supporting me.

"I'll be at the Football League Awards on Sunday night. It'll be a busy weekend with travelling to and from Plymouth, but I'll travel down to London on the day.

"I'm really looking forward to it."

Before then, Winnall will be hoping to help his side pick up a vital victory on Tuesday night when Southend visit Glanford Park.

They enter the match on the back of a 1-1 home draw with Northampton, and sit second in the table - one point behind leaders Chesterfield and two in front of fourth-placed Burton Albion.

"Saturday was a frustrating game, and tough for the players and supporters," Winnall continued.

"We didn't really get going to the level we can do.

"It's gone now though. At least we didn't lose and picked up another point on our way to promotion.

"If you look at the form table, Northampton were going really strong, and they are definitely a different outfit to when we played them in November.

"It waa a tough game and they played really well. They came with a gameplan and stuck with it, and it worked for them.

"I think we'll go into Tuesday's game against Southend in high spirits.

"It's going to be a tough game. They're on a bad run of form and we have to capitalise on that.

"We need to get back to winning ways. We're in a fantastic position at the moment, in second, but we're still gunning for that top spot and we still want to get promoted as champions.

"Hopefully we can get the win on Tuesday and that can push us back to the top of the league."
