PLYMOUTH v IRON - WE'VE MET BEFORE

13 March 2014

Saturday will see the Iron make their first trip to Plymouth Argyle in four-and-a-half years.

Of course, we already at Glanford Park earlier this season - with Etienne Esajas scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory in September.

The last encounter…

The last time these two teams met prior to this season, they were playing for three Championship points which both sides crucially needed if they were to survive relegation. Scunthorpe claimed the three points at Glanford Park after defeating Plymouth 2-1. Although Jamie Mackie put Plymouth ahead midway through the first half, it only took Scunthorpe five minutes to level the game after Garry Thompson finished off a Hayes pass. Woolford scored from 25 yards to put the Iron 2-1 up in 65th minute, which proved to be the winner to seal all three points for Scunthorpe.

A glimmer of hope…
A 1-0 victory over Plymouth in March of the 2007/2008 season was exactly what Scunthorpe needed if they were to survive the drop to League One. A Morris left footed strike was enough to get the three points need if they were to stay up, but unfortunately they couldn’t build on the win. Two wins in 13 prior to the success against Argyle and four straight defeats after the victory left Scunthorpe around the bottom of the table. Despite picking up seven points from their last three games, it wasn’t enough to avoid the drop as Scunthorpe were to play their next season in the division below.

Other memorable scorelines…
17/03/2001 Scunthorpe United 4–1 Plymouth Argyle
30/03/1999 Plymouth Argyle 5–0 Scunthorpe United
23/02/1963 Plymouth Argyle 2–3 Scunthorpe United
11/11/1961 Scunthorpe United 5–1 Plymouth Argyle
