IRON v SOUTHEND - WE'VE MET BEFORE

11 March 2014

Formerly an ever present fixture in the Iron’s calendar, this will be the first time that the Iron have played Southend at Glanford Park since 2008.

Scunthorpe were 1-0 victors away at Southend earlier in the season, with Chris Iwelumo netting the winner.

THE CHANGE OF LEAD…
There was lots of pace and a thoroughly flowing move which saw Freddy Eastwood net against the Iron in October 2004 at Glanford Park. He headed in after a quick counter attack and a perfectly placed cross, leaving keeper Paul Musselwhite helpless. The Iron had flipped the scoreline on its head by half time though, with Steve Torpey deflecting in the equaliser in the 35th minute after a low cross from Cleveland Taylor. It was Paul Hayes who put the hosts in the ascendancy a minute before half time, with another cross, this time from the left sent in low towards Hayes. The Iron striker passed the ball into the net, with it taking a wicked deflection to loop into the net. The second half came and it was nearly an hour before the visitors got back on terms, with Jim Corbett weaving his way through and sending a sumptuous shot into the net. The Iron had the last laugh though, with Andy Crosby sending a header goalwards from a corner, with Paul Hayes getting the decisive touch on the goal line. The goal was give to Crosby though.

CRUCIAL DEFEAT…
Nearing the end of the season in 2003/04, the Iron were defeated at Roots Hall in what could have been the pivotal defeat in the Iron’s bit to stay in the Football League. Scunthorpe lost 4-2 on the Friday night in April, with the season nearly slamming shut on the visitors. Two goals in two minutes sank the Iron early on, with Leon Constantine and Drewe Broughton getting the goals. A minute later, they were back in it, with Matt Sparrow reducing the deficit. Leon Cort further extended the hosts lead before half time, with Steve Torpey reducing it back to 3-2 just before half term. With the Iron battling to get back on terms, it was Constantine getting the sealing goal in the 86th minute, rounding off any realistic chance of any points.
