DELIGHTED WITH HOW IT'S TAKING SHAPE

16 June 2014

United manager Russ Wilcox has expressed his delight about the squad he has available for the 2014/15 Sky Bet League One season.

It’s now more than six weeks since the Iron secured promotion to the third tier of English football after a remarkable campaign that saw Scunthorpe finish second in League Two.

Less than two months remain until the start of the new season and Wilcox is thrilled with how his team is shaping up.

“It’s a difficult period this last period now (before the players report back for pre-season training) but we’re delighted with where we are,” he told The Iron Player.

“I’m delighted to have the squad that we have available and I think it tells you everything about the football club that we’re trying to develop it and move it forward by everybody re-signing.

“The break between the end of the season and the start of pre-season training is always a difficult one but it has gone okay.”

United accumulated 81 points last season in a campaign that included a 28 game unbeaten run as the club made an immediate return to League One.

And Wilcox believes that a large part of that was down to the players and staff alike sharing the same vision throughout the year.

He continued: “Everybody enjoyed last season and has got the same vision we have about taking the club forward again this year.

“That’s why the majority of them have re-signed with us again and it’s great to keep the group together.

“We’ve spoken about that, done that, hopefully we’ll try and add a couple more to it and things have gone pretty well so far.”

Just one out of the thirteen players that were offered new deals following last season have now agreed new terms with the club.

Matt Godden was the only player not to accept a new contract and will move to non-league side Ebbsfleet United but Wilcox feels that the fact so many others did decide to re-sign for the club will give them a head start over other teams.

“I think it’s huge. Hopefully it will give us a head start on other clubs who are bringing in four, five, six, seven players because sometimes it takes them a while to gel,” he added.

“We know what we’ve got in that dressing room which is a big advantage for us.

“We’ve added Jennsion Myrie-Williams which I’m delighted about and if we can add one or two more then it’s going to be a fairly strong squad.”
