Iron boss Russ Wilcox says youth team players will be involved in his side's double-header of midweek friendlies.

United play Lincoln City at home in a Lincolnshire Senior Cup semi-final and Carlton Town away in a friendly on Wednesday night as the Scunthorpe boss looks to give his squad as much game time as they require in preparation for the season opener at Swindon Town in less than three weeks' time.

The Iron have played two friendlies so far and Wilcox is pleased with the fitness levels shown.

He told The Iron Player: "We'll see how everyone is on Monday morning. We'll have a staff meeting, which (academy manager) Tony Daws will be involved in as well, because we will put some of the youth players forward so as to make two squads for the two games.

"The worrying thing is in the Lincoln game you can only make three substitutions, which I think is crazy. It's a pre-season game and we should be allowed to make at least five.

"They are the rules we have to abide by so it's food for thought really.

"Seven outfield players will have to play 90 minutes so we will have to choose the right players, who are probably ahead of some of the other group to play those 90 minutes.

"The last thing we want from the Lincoln game is to come out with injuries."
