United fan Joe McCormick achieved a lifelong dream on Monday when he signed as a player for the day.

The London-based supporter was the highest bidder for the ‘sign as a player’ prize during the Countdown to Christmas which was launched last December.

Joe arrived in Scunthorpe from the Capital and he was instant taken down to training where he watched manager Russ Wilcox and assistant John Schofield put the lads through their paces.

Upon his return to Glanford Park following training, Joe sat down with Club Secretary and General Manager David Beeby who took him through the signing of a professional contract.

Each aspect of the standard Football League and Premier League contract was completed and Joe signed on the dotted line in the presence of the United manager.

In traditional style following the signing of a contract, United’s new signing was taken pitch side for the traditional photographs and interview.

After signing his one-day contract Joe said: “This is a dream come true for any fan.

“I’ve met the majority of the players and the manager so now I sort of feel like one of the lads."

“Terry Hawkridge stopped and had a good chat with me down in the tunnel at lunchtime,” he continued.

“It’s been a surreal day I got up here nice and early, went down to see the players train. Unfortunately I was unable to get my boots on but it was nice to watch.

“After that I got the chance to sit down and sign the contract and have a long chat with David Beeby before meeting Russ and the players.”

United’s newest recruit added: “It’s been a great day spent down here at the club.”

The final addition to the prize was for Joe to choose a squad number which would feature on the back cover of one upcoming programme.

Joe will be listed at the bottom of the Iron squad on tonight’s Lincoln City programme having selected number 23.
