NEWPORT v IRON - WE'VE MET BEFORE

28 February 2014

Saturday sees the Iron make the trip to face Newport County for the first time in 26 years.

Prior to the 1-1 draw at Glanford Park back in August, the last encounter between the two sides came in Scunthorpe’s last season at the Old Show Ground, with Newport coming on top of the wins ratio by 11-8.

Meanwhile, there have been seven draws in the 26 meetings between the sides.

THE LAST AWAY ENCOUNTER…
16/01/88 – Newport County 1-1 Scunthorpe United

The last time the two sides played was at Newport’s Rodney Parade 25 years ago. It ended in a score draw, with Kevin Taylor netting the Iron’s goal at Somerton Park.

CONTRASTING MONTH…
09/03/70 – Newport County 3-0 Scunthorpe United
28/03/70 – Scunthorpe United 4-0 Newport County

The Iron endured a contrasting month of March in the 1969/70 season. With a long fixture list to catch up with, the Iron played host to a lot of fixtures, playing Newport at the start of the month away from home. The succumbed to a 3-0 defeat, but just nineteen days later the Iron avenged that defeat; winning 4-0 in front of their home fans. George Kerr got one of the goals, as did Angus Davidson; whilst Nigel Cassidy bagged a brace to rectify the defeat earlier in the month.

CLASSIC AWAY WIN…
10/10/70 – Newport County 2-3 Scunthorpe United

The Iron produced an impressive away win, although they had to fight hard for the victory, edging out their opponents by one goal. Nigel Cassidy got two of the goals, whilst Angus Davidson got the other Iron strike, with the hosts only matching Scunthorpe with two goals. Newport won the reverse fixture at the Old Show Ground 1-0 though.

THE LAST OLD SHOW GROUND ENCOUNTER…
In the last season the Iron played Newport, the side travelled to North Lincolnshire and the Old Show Ground for what was to be the very last time. The Iron made sure they went out with a bang, albeit a September fixture, winning 3-1 in front of their own supporters. Andy Flounders got two of the goals, whilst Mark Atkins got the other. Due to the Newport’s difficulties that season, they didn’t get to play at Glanford Park before their financial difficulties which saw them reform in 1989, meaning the weekend’s fixture will be the first.

THE MEMORABLE SCORES…
18/10/68 – Scunthorpe United 1-0 Newport County
07/12/74 – Newport County 2-0 Scunthorpe United
11/01/75 – Scunthorpe United 4-1 Newport County
04/10/77 – Newport County 3-1 Scunthorpe United
04/04/78 – Scunthorpe United 2-0 Newport County
