PAST TIMES: BRADFORD v IRON

19 December 2014

Scunthorpe face Bradford City at the weekend, a team the Iron have faced 45 times in the past.

Extra time victory…
Scunthorpe defeated the Bantams 3-2 in the 1994/95 FA Cup after the game went to extra time. The Iron left it until late to progress through to the next round, with Ian Thompstone scoring the winning goal for the home side. Graham Alexander and Matt Carmichael scored the first two goals for the claret and blue.

Defeat for the Iron…
This was in the 2005/06 season and Dean Windass marked his 37th birthday with a hat-trick against Scunthorpe, helping his side to a 4-2 victory at Valley Parade. Windass opened the scoring after seven minutes but Scunthorpe replied with goals from Beagrie and Hinds. Three goals in six minutes put Bradford ahead in the second half with Windass levelling and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson making it 3-2. With half an hour left to play Windass doubled the deficit, completing his hat-trick. In front of 8,409 fans, Scunthorpe were unable to find a third and fourth goal.

The most recent fixture…
Scunthorpe beat Bradford 2-0 in the 2006/07 season, the very campaign the Iron achieved promotion to the Championship. The club were top of the league at the time, a position they kept until the end of the season. Billy Sharp netted his 27th goal of the season, turning away from a defender before firing home. After Bradford had a goal disallowed Beckford was able to score from 25-yards out, thus extending Scunthorpe’s run to 18 games.

Football League Trophy Encounter…
This match was played out at Ashton Gate in 2006 and finished 2-1 to the Iron. Scunthorpe took the lead just after half time through Robbie Foy. Matthew Clarke was then sent off for the Bantams, with Jim Goodwin scoring the subsequent penalty to double the scoring. Joe Brown scored a late consolation for the home side but they could not find an equaliser, meaning the claret and blue were the ones progressing through to the next round.
