WILCOX HAILS AWAY FOLLOWINGS

15 August 2014

Following the first two games of the season, both away from home, United boss Russ Wilcox has both praised and thanked the fans for their support.

454 made the long journey south as the side faced Swindon Town on the opening day, while 551 made a trip cross-country to Blackburn Rovers in the Capital One Cup; figures that Wilcox and his players have been highly grateful for.

“We’ve had outstanding support over the first two fixtures,” Wilcox stated to The Iron Player.

“We’re obviously disappointed for those who made the trip to Swindon.

"But you would say even after 12 minutes, they got behind the team and helped us get back into the game. On another day, I think we could have come away from there with something from the game – we certainly created enough opportunities to do that.

“They stuck with us though. The other night was just great. I don’t think we had been to Blackburn in thirty to forty years, so there won’t have been many in that crowd who went to the last game.”

He added: “To go to a Premiership stadium against a top quality Championship team and come away with a victory is a reward to the fans for their support.”
