THERE COULD BE MOVEMENT

4 August 2014

With the new League One campaign set to kick-off in less than a week’s time, Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox indicated there could yet be movement within the Iron squad.

Last week, we saw Wilcox bolster his defensive options with Miles Addison and Miguel Llera. The squad now has Addison, Llera, Niall Canavan, Andrew Boyce, David Mirfin (currently injured), Callum Howe and Luke Waterfall who operate at the centre of defence.

The manager hinted the latter two could be going elsewhere to get some game time.

“It’s a possibility Luke Waterfall or Callum Howe might go out on loan,” Wilcox told The Iron Player, after the 3-1 win over Leicester in our final pre-season friendly.

“We are waiting on other clubs in that respect at the moment. I spoke to a manager who would like to take one of them in but he needs a forward and a central defender and he’s undecided where he is going to put the money.

“Budgets are tight and we have to respect that, but there could be movement before the Swindon match.”

Wilcox doesn’t just mean outgoings, either, also suggesting there could be one or two new faces added to the squad before the first match against Swindon on Saturday.

He stated: “We’re still looking too.

“I had a look at their front two today, I won’t hide away from that. Tom Hopper and Jacob Blyth are both exciting, young players and they have been out on loan before.

“We faced Hopper at Glanford Park a few seasons ago with Bury and his development has been good. There are conversations still to be had. There’s nothing concrete on anybody coming in at the moment.

“We won’t be making panic signings, that’s a certainty because we’ve got the three up front already and we have Curtis Bateson who I like too. We didn’t use him against Leicester but his development has been good over pre-season so we won’t rush into bringing a player in for the sake of it.”
