RESPONSE DELIGHTS WILCOX

14 August 2014

Russ Wilcox was delighted with the response shown by his players after beating Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The Scunthorpe boss was disappointed with the way his side concede twice in the opening fifteen minutes of the season opener with Swindon and his side showed resilience to avoid going down the same route against superior opposition.

Wilcox was pleased with the side defensively and offensively, especially the solitary goal of the game, which was scored by Neal Bishop - his first since joining the club from Blackpool in the summer.

“Neal Bishop’s goal came from a corner and that’s all about the delivery and movement,” the delighted manager told The Iron Player.

“I was disappointed with the set-pieces on Saturday and we spoke to Gary McSheffrey about getting the ball between the sticks and he’s done exactly that. Then there’s the movement and timing from Neal and it went into the top corner for a great winning goal.

“We tried to get a second without going kamikaze and chasing too much like we did on Saturday once we conceded- and we conceded again.

“Tonight we made sure once we went 1-0 up, we were solid and everyone got behind the ball to try get us a clean sheet.”
