PREVIEW: BLACKBURN ROVERS (A)

12 August 2014

The Iron will travel to Ewood Park on Tuesday evening to face Blackburn Rovers in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The competition was won by Man City in 2013/14, after they beat Sunderland at Wembley and the previous season where Bradford reached the final as a League One club shows how it is possible for the Iron to emulate.

But first, they will have to beat Blackburn and Russ Wilcox’s men will be looking to get back to winning ways after losing 3-1 in the season opener with Swindon on Saturday.

Marcus Williams is a certainty to miss the clash, after he was shown a straight red card for violent conduct at the County Ground.

Also missing will be David Mirfin and Dave Syers (both knee injuries).

Sky Bet Championship club Blackburn, managed by Gary Bowyer, played Cardiff on Friday evening in front of the Sky Sports cameras, drawing 1-1.

They will be looking to build on last year’s domestic campaign after narrowly missing out on a play-off place by two points and they have since signed Chris Brown from Doncaster Rovers, Luke Varney from Leeds United and Alex Baptiste on loan from Bolton Wanderers.

The meeting will be just the clubs’ THIRD meeting in their histories, the first since 1973. That last fixture came in Division Three as we drew at 1-1 at home seven months after losing 3-0 in Lancashire.

Elsewhere, Barnsley will play Crewe, Birmingham play Cambridge, Bolton face Bury in a tasty north-west clash, Brighton face Cheltenham, Bristol City will play Oxford, Burton host Wigan, Charlton v Colchester, Chesterfield v Huddersfield, Crawley v Ipswich and Dagenham v Brentford.
