PAST TIMES: SWINDON v IRON

7 August 2014

The opening day of the season will see the Iron head to Swindon Town, a fixture that has seen some very entertaining clashes over the last few years.

In total, the two clubs have played each other on 21 occasions, with the Iron winning six of those, Swindon winning eight and seven draws.

The last of those was on the final day of the 2012/2013 season, where the Iron were relegated to League Two despite a 3-1 victory.

All four goals in that match were scored in the last ten minutes, with James Collins giving Swindon the lead before Michael Collins, a Mark Duffy penalty and a Karl Hawley.

HIGH-SCORING ENCOUNTER…
01/11/08 – Scunthorpe United 3-3 Swindon Town

The two teams contested a highly entertaining 3-3 draw in the 2008/2009 season. Simon Cox opened the scoring before a Grant McCann free kick put the Iron level and then a Martyn Woolford strike put United ahead.

Cox pegged the Iron back again before a Krystian Pearce header once again put the club in front. A late Cox penalty to complete his hat-trick meant the club had to share the spoils.

NINE-MEN LET LEAD SLIP…
02/02/09 – Swindon Town 4-2 Scunthorpe United

The Iron let a two goal slip as they were reduced to nine men in a memorable encounter, following the sending’s off of Cliff Byrne and David Mirfin back in 2009.

Gary Hooper and Henri Lansbury gave the Iron a two goal lead before the break but following the two sendings off, Swindon fought back.

Goals from Michael Timlin, Lee Peacock, Hal Robson Kanu and an own goal from Andrew Wright meant that the Iron came away without the points.
