DAWSON LOOKS FORWARD TO OPPORTUNITY

11 June 2013

United's player-coach Andy Dawson has revealed that he will take up a new role within the club after he re-signed for the Iron.

However, Dawson - who is the older brother of Tottenham captain Michael Dawson - admitted on BBC Radio Humberside's SportsTalk that first-team duties will be his main priority when this season starts on August 3.

"First and foremost I'm coming in as a player and I'll concentrate 110 per cent on playing," he told the show.

"I explained to Brian Laws what had been said at Hull (about the possibility of undertaking a coaching role) and he said I could play and take the reserves at Scunthorpe, which is a fantastic opportunity."

Dawson, 34, returned to the Iron 14 years after it all started for him at this very ground when he was snapped up by Laws earlier this summer following his release from Hull City.

The left-back, who only played four times for City in last season's promotion winning campaign, has already completed many of his coaching badges, including his UEFA B licence, and he is already planning ahead to claiming his UEFA A badge.

"I will be taking the reserves and hopefully I can help people in that respect," Dawson said.

"I've just finished by B Licence and I'm looking to do my A licence next summer.

"It's been a lot more difficult than I thought it would be, but they are the things you need to progress and I'm looking forward to starting again."

In his decade north of the Humber, Dawson represented the Tigers in all four divisions.

He achieved four promotions whilst he was at the KC Stadium, including two to the Premier League.

Despite leaving the Tigers, the club are honouring his testimonial which will take place in August and he admitted that he had already held preliminary talks with Steve Bruce about a coaching role within the club.

"I spoke to Steve Bruce throughout the season and when we sat down at the end of the season there was something there (in a coaching capacity)," the left-back said.

"But there was a burning desire inside me to carry on playing, especially towards the end of the season when it was squeaky bum time.

"When you're a player, they are the sorts of games you want to be involved in - they're certainly the ones I want to be involved in."

"When the option came up to go to Scunthorpe, play and do a bit of coaching as well, it means I can get the best of both worlds," Dawson continued.

"I feel I've still got something to give as a player and I think I owe it to myself to do that."

He added: “Hopefully we’ll achieve something at Scunthorpe.”

Brian Laws' latest recruits - which include Dawson and former Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo - will return to Glanford Park next week in preparation for their pre-season fitness checks, ahead of their full time return the following week.
