Under-18s preview: Oldham Athletic (A)

13 November 2020

Attention turns to the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday, as the Iron's Under-18s take on Oldham Athletic (11.30am kick-off).

Please note, in line with the current EFL COVID-19 guidelines, no spectators are permitted at these games.

The Iron exited the FA Youth Cup at the first hurdle last time out losing to Grimsby Town 2-0 at Blundell Park, while the Latics' Under-19s side progressed to Round Two following a 6-0 home win over FC United of Manchester.

Scunthorpe's last encounter in the Youth Alliance League, though, was a 3-2 home win over Mansfield Town as they maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition, with three wins from three.

Patrick Virgo, Dan Gallimore and Joey Dawson netted for the Iron to complete the win as the side made it three wins from three in the Youth Alliance League.

Both teams have face Lincoln City in the Youth Alliance Cup, with this the final match to take place in the group stages. Despite losing against the Imps 4-1, Scunthorpe can still progress to the next stage of the competition. This is because Oldham beat Lincoln 2-0, putting both sides on three points. United need to win by at least four clear goals to top the table on goals scored.

The Latics come into the game bottom in their league table out of 14 teams (north west conference) with just one point from their six games.

The Iron's Under-18s have been forced have Under-15s and Under-16s in the group to supplement a smaller squad of scholars this season, but have been back to a full compliment of players for their last couple of games.

Oliver Kemp will be assessed after being forced off after just ten minutes of the FA Youth Cup game after a goal line clearance from the defender, although it did allow Oliver Lobley to return to action following a stomach injury and increase from the 36 minutes of gametime he received in the last league encounter.

Ben Franklin has also returned to the squad following an ankle ligament injury and he was an unused substitute last time out.

Report: Oldham Athletic U18s 7-1 Iron U18s

14 November 2020

The Iron's Under-18 side were defeat by Oldham Athletic in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday, which saw them eliminated from the competition.

The side, however, still have a 100% record in the Youth Alliance League, which will now be their sole focus between now and the end of the season.

The scoreline doesn't tell the full story though, with over half the squad wiped out of action due to COVID-19 protocols. One second year scholar is currently absent having tested positive with the virus. As a result, a further five players are self-isolating, including four further second-year scholars.

It was a difficult morning in Greater Manchester with Jim Simms (two), Harry Vaughan, Asa Hughes, Junior Luamba, Joe Edwards and an own goal handing the Latics seven goals.

Oliver Lobley got the Iron's strike three minutes before the interval in the 42nd minute.

All the best to Oldham, who progress to the next stage of the competition after also beating Lincoln City in the group stages to top the table.

IRON: Balme, Baker, Lewis, Griffin (Cribb, 62), Elliott-Bell (Abraham, 78), Young, Lobley, Moore-Billam, Franklin (Hewitt, 78), Wilkinson (Strouther, 62), Virgo.
