Report: Iron U18s 2-0 Lincoln City U18s

12 October 2019

Harry Jessop and Raynner Silva scored in the second-half as United’s Under-18s defeated their Lincoln City counterparts 2-0 at Appleby-Frodingham on Saturday morning.

The Iron had two corners in quick succession at the start of the game. The first was headed behind and the second was taken short by Cameron Wilson and the cross found Levi Gallimore at the back post, whose header was blocked.

United came close in the 15th minute as Levi Gallimore threaded the ball through to Jessop, who went on a jinking run, rounding the ‘keeper in the box but he couldn’t quite get his shot away with three red and white shirts surrounding him.

On 20 minutes, Finley Shrimpton took aim from the edge of the area but saw his shot blocked. It fell out wide to Levi Gallimore on the right, who slid the ball in for Joey Dawson and the skipper sidefooted just over the bar from the centre.

In the 34th minute, Jessop tried his luck from just outside the area but it fizzed wide of the post.

Soon after, Levi Gallimore accelerated into the box and squared it to an unmarked Jessop, but an Imps defender cleared his effort off the goal-line.

On 37 minutes, the Imps fashioned an opening at the other end of the pitch as their number 10 crossed, only for a red and white shirt to sky his shot.

With half-time approaching, the Iron piled the pressure on. Jessop beat his man and cut inside, curling an effort towards goal. However, the Imps’ shot-stopper was equal to it and Levi Gallimore couldn’t quite catch the rebound.

On 43 minutes, the Imps worked the ball into the final third and a Lincoln attacker had an effort from the edge of the box but it trickled narrowly wide of the upright.

Early in the second period, Dawson won the Iron a corner but nobody could quite connect with the set piece as it bounced around in the box.

In the 51st minute, Wilson whipped a good ball into the box from the right which was met by Jessop, but he couldn’t keep his header down.

The Iron won a spot-kick a minute later, which Jessop stepped up for and fired into the back of the net.

Moments later, Collins was called into action, saving with his body to deny Lincoln’s number 11 an instant equaliser.

There were then heroics from Charlie Barks, as a red and white shirt pounced on a loose ball in the box but the centre-back was well positioned to head the ball off the line.

The 58th minute saw a great chance for the Iron to double their advantage. Jessop picked out Levi Gallimore in the penalty area but, at full stretch, the striker couldn’t quite reach to the ball to add the final touch.

Soon after, Lincoln’s number seven caught the ball on the volley but it didn’t trouble Collins as it went high and wide.

On 79 minutes, Shrimpton did well to work a shooting opportunity. He danced into the box before taking aim but it flashed wide.

Five minutes before full-time, substitute Silva made it 2-0 to the Iron, netting from inside the area, with the ball kissing the post on the way in.

Shortly after, there was good defending from Kemp, sliding in to deny an Imps’ player a chance to shoot.

IRON: Collins, Baker, Kemp, D. Gallimore, Barks, Shrimpton (Chadli, 90), Wilson, Dawson (Silva, 80), L. Gallimore (Wilkinson, 73), Jessop, Lobley.
