Report: Huddersfield Town U18s 1-2 Iron U18s

19 November 2018

The Iron’s Under-18 side bounced back from a heavy defeat last week to beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 away from home.

Steve Thornber’s side took a two-goal advantage through Finley Shrimpton and captain Tom Pugh.

With 15 minutes left, the Terriers got one back, but solid defensive play and impressive saves from Sam Riches ensured the Iron left with three points.

Despite Huddersfield starting the stronger of the two sides, the game’s first big chance went Scunthorpe’s way. A corner was sent to the far post for Miracle Okafor, who headed back across goal, but Jack Harrison’s attempt was cleared off the line.

Five minutes later, the home side advanced forward, but their striker slotted the ball wide after going through one-on-one.

A couple more chances followed for Huddersfield, however the Iron scored the game’s first goal to go 1-0 up. United broke with a counter attack, which allowed Shrimpton to strike an effort at goal, with his shot deflecting off an opponent before it looped over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Following that goal, however, Shrimpton was forced off injured and replaced by Luca Chadli.

After the break, the Iron switched formations to retain possession more and it paid off when the Iron increased their lead. Okafor ran at the defence and pulled the ball back to Pugh, who finished it home from 15 yards.

Huddersfield continued their heavy pressure and pulled a goal back in the 75th minute. Their left winger drove forward and crossed for their striker to touch the ball home at the front post.

The Iron continued to defend well after that goal and had bodies behind the ball, with Riches making a couple of fine saves.

Louis Collins could have sealed the victory for the Iron in the 83rd minute after running through their defence, but his shot just went wide of the target.

In the final stages of the game, Riches had to be alert to make a vital save. The goalkeeper tipped a shot onto the crossbar to make sure Scunthorpe left with the three points.

IRON: Riches, Baker, Train (Jessop, 77’), Pugh (c), Barks, Morfoot, Harrison, Shrimpton (Chadli, 38’), Okafor, Collins, Busby (Wilson, 85’).

IRON UNUSED SUBS: Crosher.
