Myles Hippolyte opened the scoring with a penalty but United were eventually beaten 3-1 at Mansfield Town on Saturday.
The Iron entered the game making one change from the side that drew 1-1 with Salford City a week earlier, as debutant Kieran O'Hara came into the team for goalkeeper Rory Watson.
With five minutes gone, Emmanuel Onariase got in the way to block a goal bound effort from Harry Charsley following a cut-back from the right side of the area.
Three minutes later, George Taft won a challenge aerially, as did Onariase, battling with Ollie Clarke. The Stags skipper stayed down requiring treatment with play then resuming with a drop ball.
Iron goalkeeper O’Hara was called into action for the first time on the 10 minute mark as he tipped Elliott Hewitt’s looping header over the bar following a Mansfield free-kick into the area.
A minute later, George Maris got space on the edge of the area on the left side, with his effort dragged wide of O’Hara’s right-hand post.
With 14 minutes gone, Hippolyte broke the offside trap, beat Bishop to the race and was wiped out, which resulted in a penalty being awarded to the Iron.
There was no mistake from Hippolyte, who dusted himself down after winning the penalty to send Bishop the wrong way to put United 1-0 up.
Four minutes later Scunthorpe almost made it two as Ryan Loft muscled in, shrugged off John-Joe O’Toole and slotted an effort narrowly wide of Bishop’s right-hand post.
At the other end, Jordan Bowery had a golden opportunity to equalise, but O’Hara narrowed the angle and the Stags man hit the foot of the post before Alex Kenyon cleared.
A minute later, Stephen McLaughlin sent in a low drive from the left side of the area, but his effort took a deflection and goes wide for a corner, which was dealt with.
Straight after, Onariase sensed half a yard on a forward pass from the Stags to slide in and cleanly take the ball, allowing the Iron to come away with possession.
On 28 minutes though, Ollie Clarke steered the hosts level from 25-yards with a left-footed effort.
Ten minutes later, Bowery was fed into the area, managing to turn onto his left foot, before sending an effort over the bar.
After Hayden Hackney won a corner down the right side in the 42nd minute, Mason O’Malley’s ball in was a good one, with Onariase peeling away from his marker to connect with the delivery, only for his header to go over the bar.
Two minutes later, handball shouts went unnoticed by the referee as Scrimshaw was then fed through. He muscled off O’Toole before sending a right-footed effort into the side-netting.
In the second minute of first half stoppage time, Bowery put the hosts ahead. O’Hara made one fine save down to his right, and looked to have thwarted Bowery on the rebound, only for the ball to drop below the bar and into the net.
After seeing an early free-kick cleared away, Scunthorpe's first chance of the second period came in the 52nd minute when Loft stole in on the nearside touchline as Scrimshaw was clearly held to knock the ball forward. Hackney was then hauled down making a run, but Loft saw his near post effort saved by home goalkeeper Bishop.
After 54 minutes, a throw-in on the left for the hosts caused a loose ball inside the area before Clarke found space on the right of the area, but missed the ball and O’Hara claimed.
However, they did manage to double their advantage soon after in the 60th minute as Clarke stole possession before slotting home.
United then made a change soon after as Kenyon was replaced by Alfie Beestin.
After 67 minutes, Scrimshaw broke the offside trap down the left side and sent in a cross which searched for Hippolyte. He shaped to lash a boot at the ball before a slight header from a home defender took it away from him.
On 73 minutes, Aaron Jarvis came on for Loft and then five minutes later Perry was replaced by Tom Pugh.
In between those changes, Hippolyte kept the ball in play over on the far side, before cutting onto his left foot and sending an effort over the bar.
In the 78th minute, the Iron won a free-kick on the right side of the 18-yard box and O’Malley cleared the wall with the resultant free-kick, but Bishop flew across his goal to grasp the effort.
At the other end, substitute Tyrese Sinclair then saw an effort stopped by O'Hara.
Scunthorpe attacked in the 83rd minute and Bishop flapped at a cross from Jarvis, with Scrimshaw chasing. Soon after, Pugh took a tumble inside the box, but a goal kick was awarded.
With five minutes left, Harry Charsley was denied by O’Hara as he connected to a low cross from the right.
There were three minutes of time added on and in the first of those Onariase looked to head the ball into the danger area but nobody could connect to convert and Mansfield got the ball clear. There was also a subsequent corner that was cleared.
Scunthorpe return to action on Tuesday night when they host Leyton Orient at the Sands Venue Stadium (7.45pm kick-off).
