SCENE-SETTER...

United come into the game on the back of a 3-1 defeat at Exeter City on Saturday. The result doesn't really give a true reflection of the game, from which many positives can be taken and which saw the Iron put in one of their best performances of the season to date with depleted squad options (click here for details of why).

They will be looking to build on the manner and spirit of that display when Salford come to town for the first ever time. They sit eighth in the table and drew 1-1 at home to Crawley at the weekend. Just a fortnight ago, they parted company with former Scunthorpe boss Graham Alexander and assistant Chris Lucketti.

THE OPPOSITION...

Saturday saw them draw 1-1 at home to Crawley Town, with James Wilson's opener cancelled out by George Francomb. The prior Tuesday had seen their first victory under interim boss Scholes as they defeated Southend United 3-0 at home. Wilson scored again, with his strike sandwiched by two own goals.

Their last game on the road saw the first defeat of the season, as they were edged out 1-0 at Port Vale.

That was the first match following the departure of Alexander and Lucketti, who left two days after a 2-2 home draw against Tranmere Rovers which saw them let slip a two goal lead.

Prior to that, they'd won at Stevenage and Grimsby, but drew at home to Forest Green and Exeter City.

Summer arrivals included former Rochdale striker Ian Henderson, ex-St Mirren goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky, defender Jordan Turnbull from Northampton Town, midfielder Jason Lowe (Bolton Wanderers), forward Ashley Hunter (Fleetwood Town) and centre-back Tom Clarke (Preston North End).

TEAM NEWS...

Goalkeeper Rory Watson is likely to miss out again through a groin injury, while winger Abo Eisa will be absent through a chest injury. Both were sustained towards the end of last week.

Striker Kevin van Veen (knee) continues his rehabilitation following surgery in September.

Central defender Harrison McGahey (hamstring) is nearing a return and was set to be assessed on Monday, while left-back Junior Brown has also been gaining fitness on the training ground during the last week after his return to the club last Sunday.

Jordan Clarke made his return to the squad for the first time in nine months last Saturday, and will be hoping to soon return to action.

PAST MEETINGS...

The two sides have only met once, with that meeting coming at the Peninsula Stadium last season. Kevin van Veen opened the scoring but Cameron Burgess cancelled it out as a 1-1 draw was played out.
