The man from Surrey officiated one United fixture in the last campaign, as Graham Alexander’s side were edged out by Bradford at the Northern Commercials Stadium in April.
Throughout 2015-16, Ward took charge of 35 games, cautioning 113 players and sending off two.
He’ll be joined on Tuesday by assistant referees Christopher Husband and Alix Pashley, with Darren Deadman taking up the position of fourth official.
