United made midfielder Stephen Dawson their first signing of the summer of 2015.
He signed on a free transfer and penned a two-year deal, with the option of a further year in the club's favour.
That came following the end of his one-year stay at League One rivals Rochdale, where he made 36 appearances in all competitions last season.
Dawson is a former Republic of Ireland U21 international, and started his career as a youth at Leicester City.
He went on to ply his trade at Mansfield Town, where he stayed between 2005 and 2008, scoring four goals in 128 appearances.
Bury was his next port of call, where he played for two years and notched six goals in 95 appearances.
2010 saw Dawson make the move to Leyton Orient, where he spent one-and-a-half-seasons, scoring four times in 75 appearances before he moved to Barnsley for an undisclosed fee in January 2012.
He stayed at Oakwell for two-and-a-half-years, hitting six goals in 85 appearances for the then-Championship side.
He turned down a new deal there in 2014 and joined Keith Hill's Rochdale, where he played a pivotal part in their play-off push.
2015-16 saw him make 25 appearances for the Iron after shaking off an early-season injury problem.
