United's juniors ran out 7-1 winners away at their Mansfield Town counterparts on Saturday morning.

The youth team started where they left off against Bradford City in the FA Youth Cup in midweek by launching attack-after-attack on the Stags' goal.

They were rewarded with an opener two minutes in, as Johnathan Williams was fouled on the edge of the area. Rory Coleman's subsequent free-kick then flew into the back of the net, with the pace of the ball taking it past the home 'stopper.

Scunthorpe continued to control the play, and scored again on 22 minutes through Jake Picton - only to see the goal disallowed.

The centre-back went one against one with an opposition defender, and the referee adjudged Picton to knock him off the ball before netting and ruled out the strike.

Marcus Gibbs then hit the woodwork five minutes later, after captain Niall Canavan played the ball forward and Picton flicked it on. Marcus Gibbs (pictured) hit the post with his effort, though, as Mansfield breathed a huge sigh of relief.

The visitors then hit the post again as a corner was cleared to the edge of the area, and Danny Wright's cross found Picton, who headed against the woodwork from close range.

There was then another great chance as Jack Cross' ball into the box reached Williams, who headed down at the goalkeeper's feet and the ball went out for a corner.

The visitors managed to notch an equaliser on 35 minutes, though, as Jamie Bladen gave a free-kick away midway through the Scunthorpe half and Ross Hyslop came sprinting off his line to catch the resulting set-piece. He dropped it, though, and the home team fired home the rebound.

This setback didn't affect Tony Daws' side, though, and they managed to be much more clinical in the second period.

An inswinging free-kick from Coleman on 53 minutes found Wright, whose shot was saved by the goalkeeper but Canavan followed it up to put his team back ahead.

They could have doubled their advantage two minutes later as Gibbs received the ball on the left-wing, and Wright's shot from his pass was saved at the far post. The ball went out for a corner, which the away side managed to score from.

Wright flicked the ball on to Gibbs, who played the ball across the edge of the box for Cross to fire into the top corner.

They then made it 4-1 on 62 minutes when Cross raced down the left and played the ball to Wright, who clipped it out wide to Coleman, whose deep cross to the far post was headed in by Gibbs.

16 more minutes passed before Scunthorpe had their fifth - Gibbs received the ball on the edge of the box at his feet and turned to shoot into the far corner.

It was 6-1 on 82 minutes when Wright made a good run down the right and whipped the ball into the area for Gibbs to head in.

They then finally made it 7-1 two minutes later as Wright fired in another. Canavan won a header from a corner which Gibbs received and fired goalwards. The goalkeeper couldn't hold it, and Wright managed to follow it up to finish the scoring off.

Coach Tony Daws was naturally thrilled with the way his charges had performed.

"This season, the boys have played really well in matches and have managed to create a number of chances. They just haven't been able to finish things off," he explained.

"Today, for the first time, we finished the chances that we created and it was a fully deserved win.

"I'm very pleased with the boys, who have bounced back really well after our FA Youth Cup exit, in which we created enough chances to score five and six."

The youth team are next in action on Saturday morning when they host Hull City at Birch Park (11.00am kick-off).
