YOUTHS UNLUCKY IN CUP
Bury Youths 1-0 Scunthorpe United Youths
Report from Lower Gigg
The Iron's youth team were really unlucky as they bowed out of the Puma Youth Alliance Cup at the first round stage against Bury, losing 1-0 to a 92nd minute goal.
It was a game that could have gone either way as both teams created chances to score.
"We were all set for penalties as there is no extra time but virtually with the last kick of the game Bury scored," said youth development officer Tony Daws.
"I had actually just started to write out the names of the five penalty takers!"
A real gale force wind blowing throughout the game spoilt it for both sides.
With only nine fit youth players to select from it meant that two U16's started the game for United. Four U16's were on the bench.
"It was a great learning experience for these young schoolboys," added Daws.
The Iron kicked in towards the fierce wind in the first half and defended resolutely to go in at half time scoreless,
In the first half Bury were restricted to shooting from distance, with nothing troubling goalkeeper Jake Turner.
In the second half Scunthorpe got on top but couldn't find the breakthrough.
With time up, Bury switched the ball to their left winger who cut inside both Johnathan Williams and Ashley Palmer before squaring the ball across the six-yard box for the Shakers to scramble the ball in for the winner.
Virtually as soon as the game was restarted by the Iron the whistle blew for full time.
Daws continued: "It was really harsh on our lads, we didn't deserve to lose today.
"I was very pleased with our performance and our effort."
