Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC) is a new programme from the Government to help disabled children, young people and their families get the support they need to live ordinary lives.
The Government held consultation events with disabled children, young people and their families to find out what they wanted most. One of the key things they said was "we want more short breaks".
This investment means that disabled children and young people can take a short break, do new things and make more friends.
Short breaks mean different things to different people. You may wish to have a service provided for your child in your own home, or have access to community or leisure services with support, or maybe you need specialist services, or even an overnight stay away from home.
North Lincolnshire has been allocated £1.13 million to develop short break services over the next 3 years, which is fantastic news for the area. It gives us a real opportunity to transform and develop services locally.
It is led by a multi-agency steering group, including partner agencies such as the local authority (North Lincolnshire Council), NHS North Lincolnshire, voluntary and community organisations, as well as parents/carers of disabled children and young people.
North Lincolnshire was awarded £1.3m over two years (until March 2011) to deliver short breaks for disabled children through the aiming high scheme. North Lincolnshire Council has been allocated £100k to develop local based activities.
SUFC Trust has been awarded over £30,000 over two years to deliver short break activities in North Lincolnshire. This is a close working relationship between the Scunthorpe United Trust and the North Lincolnshire Council Aiming High Steering Group.
The first activity was held in Bottesford Sports Hall on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October. Finally we held a deaf friendly session at Glanford Park on Wednesday 28th October 2009.
