The SUFC Trust had a full day of inclusive sports on September 25, 2009 at Bottesford Sports Hall.
As part of a new venture with North Lincolnshire Council, Scunthorpe United will deliver upon a project called Short Breaks, a project which will give parents rest bite care.
The Short Break project is being delivered as part of the wider Aiming Higher strategy which will target Scunthorpe, Brigg, Barton and the Isle of Axholme.
Scunthorpe United will deliver a series of sessions specifically designed for their needs.
This will come in the format of Blind Football, Deaf Football, Powered Chair Football, New Aged Kurling, Boccia and Goalball.
The day was designed to give staff a better understanding of the young people that they would be working with over the next two years and the types of games that could be delivered.
Staff were put through their paces by Inclusion Officer Sarah Teal and Ian Brown, from Lincolnshire Sports Partnership. Staff were blindfolded for the majority of the day so they had an appreciation of how it felt to be visually impaired or Blind.
Several new games were introduced such as a new craze called New Aged Kurling , New Age Kurling is a fast growing popular sport. Played with even teams of either singles, doubles, triples or fours, the aim of the on which teams stone/stones are nearest to the middle of the target.
Scunthorpe United FC also had sessions around boccia, boccia was solely designed as a sport for those with severe cerebral palsy. It has now developed into a game played by many sections of the community - and from a purely recreational level up to the intensely competitive Paralympics. The rules of Boccia are determined by CP-ISRA and are reviewed every four years, usually just after the Paralympics. This is a game which mirrors the principles of French Boules. Scunthorpe United staff as always gave all games a competitive edge we will give no hints of who won!!!
Scunthorpe United will be delivering sessions around the Scunthorpe area over the next year so watch this space for news of activities!
