Report from Glanford ParkUnited's reserves were beaten by a last-minute goal against Sunderland in the totesport.com League Cup.The Iron's second string were defeated 2-1 in a tight game against the Black Cats at
Glanford Park on Monday afternoon.
It was an even start, with chances limited for both sides as the opening ten minutes were played out mostly in midfield.
Peter Winn was down injured two minutes in following a collision but got back up and carried on playing.
The first notable action of the game arrived in the 16th minute when centre-back
Kenny Milne limped off.
The Scottish defender, on the comeback trail and playing in his fourth game since undergoing two knee operations last season, was replaced by
Richard Dean.
Sunderland took the lead on 24 minutes as Liam Hubbuck powered in a header at the back post after Liam O'Mahoney's cross from the right.
Winn had the Iron's first real chance of the game three minutes later as he volleyed over the crossbar after being well spotted in the area by Ian Morris' left-wing cross. It would prove to be their best chance.
Second year youth trainee Alfred Gbanie, playing on the right wing, was soon injured and was replaced by first year trainee Sam Comer.
Opportunities continued to be limited and Liam Noble had a free kick deflected wide for Sunderland on the stroke of half time before Dan Madden nodded just wide of goal from the subsequent corner.
The visitors continued to press for their second and Noble shot wide on 52 minutes, dragging his shot just past Slocombe from the right-hand side of the penalty area.
David Brown headed wide for them after a cross from deep on 61 minutes, while Noble had another attempt in the 70th minute - when he tried to clip it past slocombe.
Boyes then fired a low effort into the arms of Sunderland 'stopper Martin Fulop before, in the 80th minute. Boyes was rewarded for his pressure when he won the ball by tackling a defender and advanced goalwards before poking in a left footed effort past Fulop to cap a superb individual move.
The away side weren't finished though, and they finished the Iron off in the final minute as Ryan Noble headed in the match-winner.
