Scunthorpe United Reserves 1-6 Leeds United Reserves
Report from Glanford ParkUnited's reserve side were beaten 6-1 by their Leeds United counterparts in a totesport.com Central East Division fixture at Glanford Park on Wednesday night.A brace from Enoch Showunmi put the visitors in the ascendency late in the first half before
Ian Morris pulled one back from the penalty spot.
It was end to end stuff until Leeds got their third, and decisive, goal - again through the giant Showunmi.
His strike partner Tresor Kandol then notched a hat-trick, including one from the penalty spot, as a strong Whites side saw off a youthful Iron who never stopped battling.
The first half was an entertaining and even affair, with the Iron going close first.
Peter Winn went on a driving run through the centre and fired in a low shot during the first few minutes which was deflected wide for a corner.
From the subsequent corner, taken by Johnathan Williams,
Adam Boyes planted a header into the arms of Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren.
Leeds' first chance came the way of Kandol in the eighth minute as was played through down the right and struck in a shot which went just wide of Jake Turner's goal.
United looked encouraging going forward and a good team move saw Williams comes close, as Ankergren stopped his grilled effort well.
The Elland Road side were always a danger on the break and Neil Kilkenny drilled a shot just wide from the edge of the area.
It was end to end stuff and former Leeds man Morris was next to have a shot, as his low drive from the left-hand side of the 18-yard box was tipped out by the visiting custodian for a corner.
Midway through the opening half, United went on a great counter attack as
Andrew Wright won the ball on the halfway line and set up Joe Maguire, who curled over crossbar from 25 yards.
Scottish defender Kenny Milne, continuing his
rehabilitation after missing the last 13 months after undergoing two knee operations, looked comfortable on his third run-out for the reserves - this time lasting 45 minutes, as he was replaced by player/assistant manager
Andy Crosby at half-time.
He showed some decent touches and regularly made a good pass, with the measured ball out wide being a popular choice.
Leeds took the lead in the 27th minute as Showunmi slid his team ahead. He was played through by strike partner Kandol and took his goal well.
Moments after the restart, Boyes fired wide from a Morris corner taken from the left as Scunthorpe searched for an immediate equaliser.
Former Swansea man Andy Robinson, always a big threat against Scunthorpe, nearly got on the end of a cross to make it two, and he was to have a hand in Leeds' second goal in the 33rd minute as Showunumi powered a header in from 14 yards from his corner.
Seven minutes later Scunthorpe won a penalty as Williams was felled by Robinson on the right-hand byline just inside the area.
Morris stepped up to take the spot-kick and slotted low to the goalkeeper's right as Ankergren dived the wrong way.
Searching for an equaliser before half-time, the Iron came close through Cliff Byrne, who fired wide after connecting with Morris' free-kick from deep.
Maguire had the best chance to level the scores in the 48th minute but his powerful effort was superbly tipped over by Ankergren.
Eight minutes later, Turner, playing his first game in the second string, made a superb stop with his feet from Kandol after the former Barnet man had tricked his way into possession 10 yards from goal.
It was on 58 minutes that the Whites effectively sealed the contest - Showunmi racing clear and poking past Turner for his hat-trick goal.
United kept fighting, and
Jack Cross struck just wide 10 minutes after that goal as Scunthorpe seeked a way back into the game.
Kandol made it four for Leeds on 68 minutes after he rounded Turner and slotted the ball into an empty net following Robinson's throughball.
The lively Williams tried to get shot in for the hosts in the 73rd minute from the right byline of the penalty area, but it was well stopped by Ankergren.
Leeds were hunting a fifth goal, and midfielder Joshua Falkingham shot over the crossbar.
They got the goal they were seeking in the 77th minute as Kandol was sent clear down the right-hand side of the penalty area and slipped the ball past Turner.
United kept pressing and on, 83 minutes, Maguire's cross from deep reached the head of Peter Winn, whose header from the edge of the box was saved.
Leeds got a chance to add their sixth in the 85th minute as Palmer felled Kandol in the area and he stepped up to send Turner the wrong way for his hat-trick goal, guiding the ball to the goalkeeper's right.
Turner made a last superb stop from Kandol two minutes from time, and there were two final United changes too as first team trainees Aron Wint and Sam Comer replaced Maguire and Cross.
