The Iron won 8-0 against York City in their opening reserve league fixture of the season at Glanford Park.

They took the lead seven minutes in when Martyn Woolford headed home from a Matt Sparrow cross, and then doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Jonathan Forte glanced in a header from a Sparrow centre.

Joe Murphy, playing 45 minutes, made a superb penalty stop from Onome Sodje two minutes after that, palming a powerful effort out low to his right.

It was three on 28 minutes, with Jake Picton powering home at the back post after Peter Winn's corner.

Five minutes later Forte added his second when he capped off a great team move by receiving a Sparrow pass and lashing his effort from the left in off the crossbar.

Winn then made it five on 43 minutes when he advanced into clear space down the left and smacked the ball past Jonathan McDonald.

Forte completed his hat-trick on 52 minutes, capitalising on defensive uncertainty to slot home.

The Iron then had to wait until the 87th minute to add to the score, as Woolford jinked to the edge of the area and fired in a shot which goalkeeper McDonald fumbled into his own net.

Andrew Wright completed the scoring on 90 minutes when he latched on to a flick-on by Forte to clip the ball home.

It was a convincing start to the season for Tony Daws' men, who are next in action when they host Bradford City on Tuesday, September 9 (2.00pm kick-off).
