Scunthorpe United moved nearer safety thanks to a hard fought 1-0 victory over Macclesfield Town on this week four years ago.

Backed by a noisy crowd the Iron scored the only goal of the game ten minutes into the second half.

Macclesfield were the first team to threaten on 17 minutes when a Harsley fired in a low shot from a 20 yard free kick that Evans did well to get down low to his right and save one handed.

Steve MacLean breaks through the Silkmens' defence and fires in a shot.

At the other end MacLean brought a save from Wilson after he turned well from Sparrow's throw and drilled in a low effort and the 'keeper pushed out and the Macclesfield defence scrambled it away.

The Macclesfield 'keeper was back in action again a minute later when he came to the edge of the area to claim Stanton's high ball forward but under pressure from MacLean he missed the ball. MacLean tried to curl the ball home from a tight angle but Wilson got back to block on the goal line.

Macclesfield threatened again on 40 minutes when Graham Potter ran on to a long free kick forward and flicked in a header that Evans got down to his left to push the ball out and then turn it away from Carruthers as the forward followed in.

The Iron did go in front ten minutes into the second half when Sparrow's shot was blocked out to Beagrie on the left and he crossed to the far post where Torpey headed past Wilson.

Steve Torpey's header flies past Wilson into the back of the net to put the Iron ahead.

At the other end Tipton fired in an effort from the edge of the box on 65 minutes but Tom Evans managed to get down low and push the ball away.

Scunthorpe could have made it two on 66 when Torpey's flick-on released Sparrow on the right of the area but Wilson managed to get a hand to the midfielder's low shot before the Macclesfield defence got back to clear their lines.

Silkmen 'keeper Wilson manages to get a hand to Matt Sparrows shot to take the power out of it and allow the defence to clear.

The Iron had another good chance to make it two on 80 minutes when Sparrow broke away down the right and he squared to MacLean who turned well but fired just wide of the far post.

MacLean turns to make space for a shot.

Macclesfield though weren't lying down and when they won a free kick 25-yards from goal Tipton fired in a shot that Evans pushed out and then quickly got back to his feet to save Carruthers' header.

Substitute Paul Hayes could have made sure for Scunthorpe when Sparrow released the forward but he dragged his shot wide of goal.
